Description

Official highway maps for West Virginia, from 1943, 1990 and 2017.
Vintage official road map of West Virginia, during its 1940’s heyday, when its coal mines and steel mills were at full capacity for the Allied war effort. This was in the years before the interstate highway system, so the twisting roads connecting the major cities of the Mountain State—Wheeling, Parkersburg, Charleston, Huntington, Bluefield—were two-lane blacktops.
The next map is from 1990, when West Virginia was more connected, with interstate highways leading through its major urban centers and out to neighboring states.
The next map, from 2017, shows Wild, Wonderful West Virginia in the present day: close to nearby metro areas like Pittsburgh and Washington, DC, but far enough away to feel like another world.
